Our garden at the early stages of development.

Gardening has played a major role in my life, especially after meeting my husband. What we created in our garden was a place to escape to, away from the world. It was where we had some of our best conversations and how we learnt to work together, but also where we entertained friends and family.

Our garden was our sanctuary where we would lie on the lawn and watch the stars, count the satellites passing over, or see the occasional shooting star, while telling each other the stories we might not have told before.

These experiences, together with my knowledge of therapy, came together recently in my interview with Adam Frost from BBC Gardeners’ World. We were in Kenya at the time and I was recovering from COVID.

Having COVID while isolating in a tent in the savanna might sound romantic. It wasn’t. The passing elephants, baboons and vervet monkeys would have been entertaining had I been able to enjoy the view. But running a high fever, and aching in places I hadn’t felt before, put me flat on my back with no interest other than to sleep.

Luckily, I recovered enough to talk coherently with Adam Frost!
